In 1842 the first mayor of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Curtiss Bullard, formed a company that made spinning wheels, wooden rolling pins and kitchen products. In 1866, Curtiss and two of his sons, Orson and John, obtained a patent for a product that would change their businesses and their fortunes: the butter mold. This unique antique butter mold was made by John S. Bullard of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Born in 1823, he worked in his father's spinning wheel shop until he was 24 years old. When he was granted a patent for a butter mold, No. 54, 054 on April 17, 1866 (the date stamped on the top of this mold) he started his own business.
At that time, freshly churned butter was packed in wooden butter molds. After the butter cooled enough to hold its shape, it was removed from the mold and wrapped in waxed paper to be sold. Bullard molds had a plunger to push out butter after it became firm. In just over a decade, their company would lead the nation's production with 125,000 molds churned out annually at their factory along the south side of the Chagrin River.
Delight collectors of antique and vintage kitchen tools or surprise a baker or chef with this treasured gift. This butter press adds a touch of rustic elegance to any culinary collection. Savor the nostalgia and craftsmanship of yesteryear with this remarkable piece of culinary history.
This mold measures 4.5 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall.
